The Olsen Twins Boho Chic style is finally rising - style guide.
How to dress like the most popular fashion twins
Lately, I have noticed that Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are gaining popularity on social media for their iconic street style again. And I was waiting for this moment when the internet finally will be ready to move on from tacky Y2K to real late 2000s/early 2010s boho-chick style icons that are Olsen twins.
As a lover of everything oversized, I was always inspired by their street style. Those massive shirts with wide-legged jeans, and paired with a well-used Birkin or Balenciaga City Bag. Big sunnies that cover half of their faces. Twenty years old Olsen twins were something else and I loved it.
That’s why I decided to give you a little guide on how to dress like the Olsen twins in the 2000s/2010s:
Big shirts that look like you stole them from your boyfriend in the rush.
If you know me in real life you already know that I grew a quite decent collection of oversized shirts. They can be normal white or with classic blue stripes but also remember to get that plaid shirt from the back of your closet.
Well used and loved bag.
Olsen twins love to use their bags until they almost fall apart in their hands. So don’t be afraid to wear your beloved big leather bag that you can throw everything into. It can be black or some random color like Mary Kate's green Balenciaga City Bag which she has used for years. Don’t be afraid of fringes because they are coming back I’m telling you.
Big black sunnies.
Add some mystery to your look. Big sunnies can hide your sleepless nights, you don’t need to add another layer of concealer and they can be amazing accessories. Olsen twins were seen in massive circular half-opaque Chanel sunglasses on multiple occasions, but they also share a love for aviator style sunnies. But you can also wear an old trusted Ray Ban Wayfarer which never goes out of style.
Five hairpins rule.
The Olsen twins in the 2000s were known for their blonde, messy, beachy waves. Their hairstylist Mark Townsend even told us a rule that Mary Kate strictly obeyed when it comes to her messy updos “If hairstyle needs more than five hairpins it’s already too much”. That’s why this summer we can finally forget about clean girl aesthetic which I was never a fan of, and we can all just spray some sea salt spray on our hair and obey the five hairpins rule.
Mix textiles and prints are a must.
Lace and fur, leopard print with leather, sequins and metallic, even feathers. Twins already wore it all. Most likely in black or mixed with other black clothes. So don’t be afraid of mixing prints and textiles but remember to add some black into it.
Long skirts
As you have already seen on the streets girls are rocking those long skirts and dresses. And Olsen twins have been wearing them for ages in many different textiles and prints. They wore lace (lots of lace), metallic, and satin to name a few.
It’s Smokey Eyes time.
Again Olsen twins are not fans of clean girl aesthetics in the 2000s. Back in the day, they were wearing lots of their iconic black smokey eyes looks. Sometimes even added some red lipstick to the mix. So it’s time to pull out this eyeliner from a back drawer and find out good smokey eye tutorial on Youtube again.
I hope that little guide will be helpful for you. I was trying to include the most necessary style points of the iconic Olsen twins’ style.
Extra note: Last time I was writing a thank you note here there were only 17 of you subscribing to my little blog/newsletter. Today this blog post will be sent to at least 44 people (which is insane). And I’m not even writing here for a month. I want to thank you all for all the support I’m getting here. And hello If you are new here.
The Olsen twins are such style icons! Love their boho grungey looks and definitely see these trends start to flourish this summer. I've never heard of the 5 pin rule but gonna start incorporating it!
Ugh, such a vibe 😩 I loved them when I was little and I love them now as an adult. Such style icons fr. I’m also a Gemini and wonder if that has something to do with why I’m into their vibe so much 😂👯♀️
